Malawi: Solar for prefabricated units consultant

Chemonics seeks a short-term consultant with technical expertise on the use of solar energy. The USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program – Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project will employ the consultant to provide technical support to the Malawi Ministry of Health’s Department of Health Technical Support Services – Diagnostics. GHSC-PSM supports U.S.-funded public health initiatives around the world by ensuring that the initiatives’ supplies of health commodities remain uninterrupted. The project provides direct procurement and supply-chain management support to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the President’s Malaria Initiative, and Population and Reproductive Health project. The short-term consultant will assess the feasibility, sustainability, and cost effectiveness of using solar energy to power air conditioning units and lights in the approximately 115 prefabricated pharmacy storage units to be installed throughout Malawi. This assignment will likely include up to 30 days’ level of effort and consist of in-country and remote work. Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct a desk review to gain an understanding of Malawi’s geography, weather patterns, and other information that may affect the proposed solar solutions
  • Assemble as many sources on solar energy as possible to identify successful solar solutions
  • Conduct a desk review of available solar solutions in the market to identify specific opportunities for Malawi
  • Collaborate with in-country GHSC-PSM project staff, particularly the prefabricated storage project staff, to arrive at a consensus on how to collect information relevant to implementing the proposed solutions
  • Conduct field assessments to become familiar with and knowledgeable about Malawi’s environment and visit specific health facilities to collect information for the final proposal


  • B.S. or M.S. in electrical or environmental engineering, with a specialization in solar energy or a related area preferred
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience, including experience providing technical assistance to solar energy projects
  • Experience designing solar solutions
  • Experience carrying out similar tasks in southern Africa
  • Experience producing high-quality written reports
  • Ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in written and oral form
  • Experience supporting donor-funded programs or working with international development organizations preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in English required
