Malawi Legal Specialist

About the Job:

Connexus is seeking a Legal Specialist to participate in an agricultural financial needs assessment requested by the USDA Malawi Strengthening Inclusive Markets for Agriculture (MSIKA) project. MSIKA’s objective is to improve the commercialization of fruit and vegetable sectors for value addition, and ultimately increased trade in key target zones in Malawi. As part of the assessment, MSIKA is considering setting up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) investment fund to facilitate greater access to finance for fruits and vegetable traders and other actors. The Legal Specialist will play an essential role in helping to evaluate the legal requirements and implications for establishing theSPV fund in Malawi.

Location:

The position will be located in Malawi.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

·         Research regulations regarding fiduciary trust regulations, ownership regulations, repatriation of funds process, and Malawi finance and tax laws

·         With the Finance Specialist, conduct interviews with local financial institutions to better understand financial regulations, challenges and implications

·         Work with the Project Team Leader to determine the process and documentation needed for setting up an SPV investment fund in Malawi

·         Collect local cost information for setting up the fund

·         Summarize findings in a final report

Qualifications:

·         Advanced University Degree in Law and at least 5 years of experience

·         Knowledge of Malawian Finance and Tax laws

·         Experience with financial sector regulation a plus

·         Strong research and writing skills

·         Written and spoken fluency in English
